Snuffbox

ca. 1780 (made), late 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This box is by Johann Christian Neuber, one of the most celebrated goldsmiths in the history of snuffboxes. The goldsmith has cleverly combined his own technique of Zellenmosaik, or mosaic of hardstones set into gold collets, with the technique of Roman micromosaics only recently developed.

Arthur Gilbert was fascinated by Neuber's work, which combined his favourite media – mosaics and hardstones – into exquisite objects. He managed to acquire six Neuber boxes, two of which are set with micromosaic panels.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world’s great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
