The freedom box was a characteristically English type. The City of Londonderry presented this box to Robert Alsop, governor of the Honourable Irish Society, in 1765.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Rectangular gold freedom box; London, 1765
Physical description
Rectangular gold freedom box, the cover chased with a scrolling cartouche enclosing four putti supporting the arms of Londonderry against a view of that city and with a trophy of arms and an anchor. The sides are chased with six similar cartouches enclosing seascapes and figures, divided on the front with a trophy and a dolphin mask and on the back with a head of Apollo. The base is chased with a cartouche of scrolls and flowers enclosing the inscription.
