Oak panel; carved in relief with a representation of Venus seated in a chariot drawn through the sea by two horses, which are driven by a charioteer. On the back of the chariot stands a cupid holding a shield, and behind the chariot is a satyr. The curved end of the panel is carved with a female figure having floral scrolls for arms and leaves instead of feet. There are remains of colouring.

Purchased for £100 with 796-1895: 'split'.



This panel was formerly in the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French medieval and renaissance artefacts. In 1895 the South Kensington Museum (renamed the V&A in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork from him, (as well as sculpture and metalwork), at a cost of £11,878. 16s. 9d.
