Historical context | In the 1880s a Sudanese leader, Muhammad Ahmad, proclaimed himself the Mahdi, an apocalyptic Muslim leader, and gained much popular support. The Anglo-Egyptian campaign against him ended with the death of General Gordon at Khartoum in 1885 and the annhilation of the British force. |
