| Historical context | It is likely that all four portraits [SD.275:1-4] are copies after engravings. Three of these generals played distinguished parts in the British campaign in Egypt, 1801. SD.275:2 is probably after an engraving lettered `...by H.R. Cook, from a Miniature by W. Haines. Painted from the Original Picture by T. Lawrence, R.A', in The Royal Military Panorama or Officer's Companion, 4 vols, 1812-4, Vol. III, November 1813. Thomas Graham, Baron Lynedoch (1748-1843), Lieutenant-general; commanded troops in Malta, 1800; served with distinction in the Peninsular War under Sir J.Moore. Other portraits of the sitter are described in R. Ormond & M. Rogers (ed.), Dictionary of British Portraiture, Vol.II, Later Georgians and Early Victorians, compiled by E. Kilmurray, 1979 and in R. Walker, Regency Portraits, 2 vols, NPG, 1985. |
