This brass medal depicts Admiral Vernon with the inscription 'The British glory reviv'd by Admiral Vernon'. On the reverse side the British fleet are shown before Porto Bello with the legend, 'He took Porto Bello with six ships only by courage and conduct.'
Admiral Vernon was a British naval officer, promoted Vice-Admiral on 9 July 1739, and given the command of a squadron of five ships which on 21 November 1739 captured the Spanish colonial possession of Porto Bello (now in Panama). In celebration of this victory Vernon was granted the Freedom of the City of London and commemorative medals were produced. The Portobello areas of London, Dublin and Edinburgh were also named after this victory.
