Object history | The drawings contained in this sketchbook are preliminary studies for oil paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy, including 'The Awakening of Adonis' (1900), 'Echo and Narcissus' (1903), 'The Danaides' (1906) and 'Isabella' (1907). Other sketches are possibly for 'Nymphs finding the Head of Orpheus' (1901), 'Phyllis and Demophoon' (1907), 'Narcissus' (1913) and 'Gather ye Rosebuds while ye may' (ca.1911). Although dated 1908 the sketch of 'Gather ye Rosebuds while ye may' on page 35 of the sketchbook is not related to the composition shown at the Royal Academy in that year. 'Echo and Narcissus' is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and 'The Danaides' is in the Art Gallery, Aberdeen. Other sketches for 'Phyllis and Demophoon' are in E2 and 3-1949. |
