Whilst in prison on Robben Island Nelson Mandela undertook study with the University of London by correspondence through its External Programme and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws. It is probably during the period that he was studying for this degree that he was appointed the position of Honorary Vice President of the National Union of Students, which issued this poster. The political activism of the British against Apartheid in South Africa did much to help the movement. Apartheid was eventually overthrown when Mandela was released in 1990 and elected Leader of the country on 27 April 1994.
