Place of origin |
This is a statuette made in the early 16th century Italy. The statuette is in marble and representing the Virgin and Child with young St. John the Baptist. The young St. John appears originally to have been shown proffering a cross to the Child Christ, who is restrained by the Virgin from accepting it. The style is indicative of a South Italian origin, perhaps in Naples in the following of Giovanni da Nola, and the group can be considered of low quality.
