Bibliographic reference
The following reference is from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: 'Miller, William Richard Beckford (1769–1844), publisher, was born on 25 March 1769 at Bungay, Suffolk, the only son of Thomas Miller (1731–1804), bookseller, and his wife, Sarah. At eighteen he left for London when his considerable promise as an artist was recognized by Sir Joshua Reynolds who advised him to enrol as a student at the Royal Academy. His stay at the academy was short-lived, however, for in 1787, presumably after family pressure, Miller was placed in Hookham's publishing house. He soon mastered the trade and started his own publishing business at 5 Old Bond Street, London, in 1790. Here he built up both his business and his reputation as a publisher of high quality books.
