WARP: wool; shades of brown, sometimes plied togher; Z2S; 18 threds per inch (68 per dm).

WEFT: light red wool; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 9 knots per inch (34 per dm).

PILE: wool; 8 colours: red, yellow, green, dark blue, blue , dark brown, cream, black; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 81 knots per sq. inch (1156 per sq. dm).

SIDE FINISH: Left: missing. Right: evidence of 3 cords overcast with red wool.

END FINISH: missing

DESIGN: Field: red ground with wide lattice, one arm blue and the other cream, with stylised floral filling. Also, ragged, curved leaf in yellow in lower, right-hand corner.

Main border: reciprocal trefoil in yellow and blue, outlined in dark brown.

Inner and out borders: cream ground with flowerheads in red or dark brown.

"Fragment of Armenian carpet, 17th century", one of six fragments of carpet (that) have been obtained, it is understood from Smyrna refugees. They represent types of older carpets which are now becoming rather expensive.. a very good opportunity is offered of securing good pieces at a nominal price."
