Physical description | Joint stool of oak, oblong top moulded at edges; frieze moulded, four turned and ringed legs splayed outwards with rectangular blocks forming feet which are united with plain stretchers. The 'pegs' to feet (that is, the smaller, turned projections at the base that take the wear on the legs, are still present. |

Object history | Bequeathed by Harold A. Peto of Iford Manor, Bradford-on-Avon, Wilts (an architect and garden designer, whose collection of furniture consisted 'entirely of oak'). H. Clifford Smith, in a minute note (2/8/33) wrote that it is 'a characteristic example, of unusually massive construction' ‘Mr. Harold Peto’s Collection’ by ‘M.J.’ in Country Life, April 10th, 1926 (vol. LIX), Iford Manor, Wiltshire, the property of Mr H.A. Peto – I and II, in Country Life, Aug. 26th 1922, pp.242-8, and Sept. 2nd 1922, pp.272-7 On long-term loan to Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery since 1982. Displayed at Rowley's House, Shrewsbury, 1982-2013. Moved to new premises in September 2013. |
