Credit line | Bequeathed by Harold A. Peto |
Object history | Bequeathed by Harold A. Peto of Iford Manor, Bradford-on-Avon, Wilts (an architect and garden designer, whose collection of furniture consisted 'entirely of oak'). H. Clifford Smith, in a minute note (2/8/33) wrote that it came 'from Derbyshire. The interest of this piece consists in the fact that the recessed upper doors are inlaid with floral designs.' ‘Mr. Harold Peto’s Collection’ by ‘M.J.’ in Country Life, April 10th, 1926 (vol. LIX), Iford Manor, Wiltshire, the property of Mr H.A. Peto – I and II, in Country Life, Aug. 26th 1922, pp.242-8, and Sept. 2nd 1922, pp.272-7 On loan to Exeter, 1970-2000(?) |
Historical context | Comparable pieces: See for example, Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition (Woodbridge, 1979), figs. 3:267, 3:271, 4:120. The lack of prominent fluting appears to argue against an early 17th century dating, while the inlay suggests a Yorkshire origin. |
