Historical context
Sir Richard Wood (1806-1900), diplomat. Attached to the British embassy in Constantinople 1824-c.1840; envoy in Syria 1832-3 and 1835-6 (Beirut). British Consul in Damascus, 1841. British Consul-General in Tunis, 1855; retired 1879. (See Boase, 1965)
