Man's Suit

1770s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Man’s suit of tawny silk taffeta with a ‘faux ermine’ effect created with a black chiné warp. The coat has a round neckline and 2-piece curving sleeves ending at the wrists with 3¼-inch (8.2 cm) cuffs. It has curving fronts, a shaped pocket flap and pocket on each front and pleats, 4 ½ inches (11.4 cm) deep below the waist. The coat is lined with fustian and the skirts, fronts, pocket flaps and cuffs faced with black silk shag. There are 10 beige silk covered buttons surrounded with beige silk cord and tassels on each front, 3 on each cuff, pocket flap, below the pockets, along the pleats and 1 at centre back. A braid of beige silk cord is applied in parallel lines, around the neck, down each front, around each pocket flaps and cuff, and along the centre back opening and pleats.

The waistcoat is made of the same silk, fronts and back, lined with fustian, the fronts and skirts faced with black silk shag. It has a round neck and curved fronts, with skirts reaching to the top of the thigh. It has the same arrangement of buttons, tassels, fringe and braid as the coat, 12 on the right front and 12 on the left with 12 corresponding buttons on the left, edged with silk braid.

The breeches are made of the same silk and lined with fustian. The waistband and legs are cut in 2 pieces, the later higher and gathered at the back. The breeches have a fall front, lined with black silk shag, a pocket on each side and a watch pocket in the right waistband. They fasten with 3 self-covered buttons and buttonholes at centre front, a beige silk-covered button for each corner of the fall front and pockets. There are 5 beige silk-covered buttons on each outside leg above the knee, and a knee band with metal buckle.

The suit has been altered, possibly for 19th century fancy dress. Extensions of cotton fabric have been added to the waistband of the breeches and ruffles of machine lace to the coat cuffs.
