Place of origin |
This is one of the first two engravings to be produced from the close collaboration between John Constable and the mezzotint engraver David Lucas. Lucas's successful interpretation of this subject and its companion, Departing Storm, led directly to the inception of the English Landscape project and it is upon them that Constable's entire mezzotint heritage depends. However, a composition by John Constable of this subject is not recorded and it is possible that Lucas made this mezzotint after his own design to show Constable of what he was capable.

Object history | Exceptionally rare progress proof. |
Historical context | Shirley thought that the image was based on a watercolour attributed to Constable which was in 1930 in the collection of Major P.W. Leggatt. Doubt has since been cast on this watercolour; according to the sales catalogue for Campbell Fine Art, from whom the print was purchased, it may well be a reversed copy of the mezzotint. |
