Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - `acquired from Henry D'Olier Vigne, great-nephew of the artist, May 1971, £200'. [with SD.1087- SD.1099, SD.1101-SD.1101, SD.1103 & 1104: SD1105-1125, SD.1127-1130, SD.1132-1134, SD.1137-1138, SD.1150, SD.1153]
Historical context
The drawing shows the Safavid buildings at the spring on Mount Sufeh, south of Julfa. See Vigne, in Kashmir..., 1842, Vol.1, p.16. Vigne may be confusing old Julfa, [now in modern Azerbaijan and completely destroyed] where the great church of St. Sophia was, and New Julfa, near Ispahan, where the Armenian population was moved by Shah Abbas I in 1606.
Vigne briefly described all of his journey in an article in The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, Vol.9, 1839, pp.512-6: see Searight Archive; and more fully in Travels in Kashmir...,1842, Vol.1, pp.5-21.
