Wa-Lolita (Japanese Lolita) evolved out of the broader subcultural style. Lolita fashion is aggressively feminine but subversive, and is characterised by petticoats and frills. It is based predominantly on Victorian children's wear and literature, particularly Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Wa-Lolita incorporates kimono elements, however, such as wrap fronts, long sleeves and obi-style sashes. This ensemble was created by students at Bunka Gakuen, one of Japan's pre-eminent fashion colleges.
