Hat
1938 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This pointed cap is made from natural palm husk folded and arranged into a cone like structure. The hat was designed by Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) who was known for her surreal and often whimsical approach to design. Schiaparelli was closely linked to the artists of the Surrealist movement and often designed garments in collaboration with artists such as Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dali.
This hat represents the duality of surreal design, it simulates the very elegant neat and chic styles of fashionable hats worn at this period but is actually crafted from a rough and valueless piece of discarded palm husk.
The hat was photographed in Vogue in 1938, worn by the society beauty Lady Diana Cooper.
