Historical context | Reproduced in `Punch' 15 November 1879, p.223. Sir Henry Layard was Ambassador to the Porte in 1877. The cartoon comments on his change of heart (and consequently tactics) towards the Sultan, from being extremely pro-Turkish to firm resolution that the Turks must be persuaded to change their ways, and reform. This change was attributed in some quarters to Layard's realisation that a General Election was pending and that he had better act tactically in a way most likely to benefit himself. For further information on the events satirised by Tenniel, see Searight Archive. |
