Object history | According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Sherborne Gallery, Dec.1971, £18' |
Historical context | Reproduced in `Punch' 23 February 1878, p.79. The occasion for this cartoon was the entry of the British fleet under Admiral Hornby, into the Sea of Marmara, where it anchored off Princes' Island. Although the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78 had been officially ended by an armistice signed at the end of January, the Russians had continued to advance until they were within a few miles of Constantinople, which they showed every sign of intending to occupy. For further information on the events satirised by Tenniel, see Searight Archive. |
