Historical context
One of 26 in an album of `Oriental Sketches' attributed to W. J. Müller and sold by an anonymous vendor at Christie's, 4.7.67 (79) (bt Agnew), with the following provenance: `Lord Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere, thence by descent to the present owner. The Earl of Ellesmere helped finance Müller's expeditions to the Middle East, and was presented with this album on the artist's return'. The provenance notwithstanding, stylistic and circumstantial evidence is against the attribution to Müller: see Searight Archive. The drawings in the group (with one exception) relate to plates in Lady Louisa Tenison, Sketches in the East, 1846 (SP.576), lithographed after her own sketches made in 1843; SD.1018 relates to Pl.20 in the publication. The drawings are most likely to be copies of the lithographs. For further suggestions, see Searight Archive.
