China had been the world's major supplier of woven silk for many centuries. In the 1930s it was facing strong competition from Europe. However its domestic market was large enough and manufacturers were willing to invest in silk-weaving machinery. This modest length of plain silk was one such machine-woven product from the Meiwen Factory in Shanghai.

Wedding present given to two Scots, Lieut Tom Marchant and Robina Bookless, who got married in Chongqing, west China, in 1935.
