The medallion is enclosed in a round case edged by a ribbed and twisted band. The front is set with a carved roundel of mother-of-pearl, depicting the Adoration of the Magi. The Virgin stands beneath a tall Gothic canopy holding the Child. The back of the case is embossed with a silver-gilt roundel of the Vernicle on a cross with ends shaped as fleur-de-lis, all on a gilt ground.
