Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Objects made of lacquered fabric are a speciality of the Chinese city Fuzhou. A piece of textile is first stiffened and made into the shape of a box. A layer of lacquer is then applied to the textile, another layer added when the first layer has dried, and several more layers added in the same manner. The finished product is so light-weighed that this technique is sometimes called 'bodiless lacquer'.
