Costume worn by a dancer in a Natural Movement production.

Natural Movement was established by Madge Atkinson (1885-1970), initially in Manchester in the early years of the 20th century. Madge was a barefoot dancer who drew inspiration from movement in nature (water, the breeze, etc) and from the natural movements of the human body. Along with her contemporaries Ruby Ginner and Margaret Morris, she pioneered modern dance in Britain.

Brief description
Three-part blue costume consisting of a chiffon tunic, an open chiffon gown and a cord, worn by a dancer in a Natural Movement production
Physical description
S.912:1-2019
Wide gown of blue chiffon, dip-dyed so that the centre is pale blue and the sides navy, and cut away at the front. The front and back are stitched together and the sides curved to create wide sleeves. The full width of the fabric is used so the open edges are the selvedge. Inside at the back is a pale blue ribbon loop through which the fastening cord may have passed.There is also a ribbon fastening (now incomplete) to hold the front together.

Short light blue chiffon tunic, crudely made with uneven hem and satin ribbons combining with chiffon for the shoulder straps.

Blue cord for fastening the costume, probably a bought dressing gown cord.
