Historical context
Probably exhibited at The Pall Mall Gallery, London, `Underground Jerusalem', April 1872 (27), Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, in the Holy Sepulchre. In March 1869 Simpson accompanied Captain Charles Warren on some of his underground explorations of Jerusalem for the Palestine Exploration Fund in order to send illustrations to the ILN: see Autobiography, 1903, pp.210-4, and Illustrated London News 24 April 1869, pp.423?6. In 1872 he held an exhibition, `Underground Jerusalem', at the Pall Mall Gallery, of forty Jerusalem subjects; many were bought for the Palestine Exploration Fund.
