In the Tang dynasty (618-907) grave goods included replicas of men and women engaged in work or leisurely recreations, made from pottery but in reduced size. This figure of a plump woman reveals that it was not fashionable to be slim in the 8th century, because the favourite concubine of the emperor was a woman of considerable proportion.
