Place of origin |
The 'Burlington' was a meeting-place for artists and connoisseurs and mounted influential exhibitions drawn from the collections of the club's members. C.A. Ionides was proud to belong to the prestigious society, even though in 1867 his circle of friends had been fractured when Whistler's brother-in-law Seymour Haden enlisted Alphonse Legros' support in an attempt to expel Whistler from the Club. Legros, caught in acrimonious cross-fire, was ostracized by all except the loyal Ionides.
