Historical context | SD.920-SD.930 are probably from a sketchbook. Although acquired at the same time as SD.915-SD.919, SD.920-SD.930 are on different paper and are possibly in a different hand. The NPG sketchbooks include sketches of Sicily and Basel dated April and May 1844, showing that Scharf could not have been in Constantinople at that time. The possibility that the inscriptions may have been added by a collector rather than the artist may account both for the discrepancies in dates and for the similarity of some of the handwriting. |
