These properties would have been used with the marionettes of Lady Bracknell and Jack Worthing in Act I of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, when Lady Bracknell and her daughter Gwendoline come to tea in Algernon Moncrieff's London flat. Other marionettes who appear in the scene (but who are not in the collection) are Algernon Monbcrieff, Gwendoline, and Moncrieff's manservant Lane.
