Winter school uniform designed by Rob Howell for Matilda in Matilda the Musical, Stratford-upon-Avon, 2010 and London, 2011
Theatre Costume
Rob Howell designed this costume for Matilda Wormwood, the major protagonist in the critically-acclaimed long-running musical Matilda the Musical written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, based on the 1988 children's book Matilda by Roald Dahl. Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the show opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on 9 December 2010, intended as a Christmas show running until 30 January 2011. Its success in Stratford led to a West End transfer to the Cambridge Theatre where it opened on 24 November 2011.
Matilda the Musical has subsequently been produced on Broadway and in many major cities around the world, including Toronto, Cape Town, Singapore and Sydney. It has won a host of awards including seven 2012 Olivier Awards - at the time the greatest number of such awards ever won by a single show.
Matilda's typical British winter school uniform with its pleated skirt, blazer, felt hat, socks and Start-Rite shoes, has been worn by dozens of girls playing the precocious and tenacious character, and Matilda's appearance in this costume has become an iconic image of the show, featuring on several of its posters and on publicity material. The gift includes all the items of uniform worn by Matilda for school and for the gym session, as well as her plain summer dress with its accessories and shoes. Several of the items were worn by Olivia Cleverley, who played the role on tour and in London.
