Place of origin |
This wood crucifix was a made as a devotional object, probably in the late 18th century, although perhaps in the early 19th century. It was formerly associated with the 17th-century Spanish artist, Alonso Cano (1601-1667), but although it exhibits Spanosh features, such as the moving and emotive depiction of the dying Christ, it may well be French, rather than Spanish. It was probably never painted or gilt, and was always a finely carved, monochrome piece. The sculptor has not yet been identified.
