Brief description
Costume worn by Leslie Echo-Ross as Elsie in a D'Oyly Carte Opera Company production of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's opera, The Yeomen of the Guard, 1992

Physical description
S.711:1-2019: Dress

Dress with close fitting multi-coloured bodice and full dark grey skirt. The bodice has long sleeves and a high rectangular neckline. It is very stiffly boned (with varying lengths of steel) around the full circumference of the bodice and laces closed at the centre back. The interior of the bodice is faced with cream cotton and the exterior has been covered with vertical strips of green, brown and yellow rough, heavy cotton. There are also press studs at the interior of the sleeve heads (possibly to secure an element of the costume in place)

A curved panel extends from the base of the bodice. This panel is masked by short hanging lengths of the same cotton strips used for the exterior of bodice and there is a vent at the centre back. There is also a small external pocket stitched onto the front curved panel.

The sleeves are brown and have lightweight cream cotton cuffs with a matching cream ‘puffs’ just above the elbow. The skirt is very full, with the fullness present at the hem gathered into cartridge pleats at the waist. It is not lined. The bodice and skirt have been deliberately distressed with top stitching imitating repairs, paint stains and tears and holes across the surface of the skirt.

S.711:2-2019: Blouse

Very pale open weave cotton blouse. Low round neckline with a fabric tie at the centre front and flaring out slightly towards the hem. Unlined.

S.711:3-2019: Belt

Leather strap, with brass studs and curved top. Groups of long lengths of fabric in tones of green, yellow, brown and blue, are suspended from either side of this strap.
