Usher Costume
The British Film Institute (BFI) acquired its costume collection for display at the Museum of the Moving Image, which existed on the South Bank in London between 1988 and 1999. The collection is made up of British, European, American and Japanese films and covers the period from the silent film era to the mid-1990s. It contains a wealth of historic and significant film costumes worn by major performers and designed by some of the 20th century’s most important film costume designers. The collection was transferred to the V&A in 2015.

Brief description | Burgundy and grey man's cinema usher uniform, Odeon Cinema, mid-20th century |
Physical description | Red coat decorated with grey ribbon around the collar and sleeves. There is a large patch with 'Odeon' on the left side of the coat. Grey trousers finished with a red ribbon over the side seams. There is an original label for Angels on the inside of the trousers as well as a number of different names with dates. The hat is grey and padded on the inside to keep its shape. The crown is decorated with a red ribbon with 'Odeon' on it. The grey braces are made of an elastic with a blue and red pattern. There are two brown leather loops at the back of the braces to attach the braces to buttons on the inside of the trousers. |
