This vase shows both Egyptian and Japanese influence. It is typical of Minton's output in the 1860s and 1870s when the firm became increasingly interested in producing wares in an 'exotic' style, in keeping with public enthusiasm for the decorative motifs of the 'orient'. The designer Christopher Dresser, to whom the design of this vase is attributed, exerted great influence on Minton wares at this time. Dresser began supplying Minton with designs for tablewares and ornamental pieces in the late 1860s and many of these made it into production. Dresser was well travelled and drew his inspiration from a number of decorative sources, making it often difficult to define his work by a particular style.
