This object is a photographic print which has been hand-coloured with watercolour. It is one of 96 similar objects, most of which are facsimiles of original miniatures in various collections, both public and private. These copies were created for J.J. Foster to illustrate his publication of ‘Miniature Painters, British and foreign...', 1903. This collection of copies was exhibited in 1908 at Dickenson’s Gallery, London, which was owned by J. J. Foster. It was accompanied by a booklet 'Exhibition Illustrating the Art of Miniature Painting’, 1908. Both publications are available in the National Art Library, V&A.
In the exhibition booklet this object is listed on page 13 as No. 4 in Case S, and identified as' Sir David Wilkie. After A. Robertson.'
Owner of the original miniature is cited in the booklet as ‘J. Whitehead, Esq.’
