This object appears to be a copy which has been hand-coloured with watercolour; there does not appear to be a photographic base. It is one of 96 similar objects, most of which are facsimiles of original miniatures in various collections, both public and private. These copies were created for J.J. Foster to illustrate his publication of ‘Miniature Painters, British and foreign...', 1903. This collection of copies was exhibited in 1908 at Dickenson’s Gallery, London, which was owned by J.J.Foster. It was accompanied by a booklet 'Exhibition Illustrating the Art of Miniature Painting’, 1908. Both publications are available in the National Art Library, V&A.

In the exhibition booklet this object is listed on page 12 as No. 8 in Case Q, and identified as 'Portrait of an Officer. After John Smart.'
No owner of the original miniature is cited in the booklet.
