Place of origin |
This object is possibly on ivory, over a photographic emulsion, which has been hand-coloured with watercolour. It is one of 96 similar objects, most of which are facsimiles of original miniatures in various collections, both public and private. These copies were created for J.J. Foster to illustrate his publication of ‘Miniature Painters, British and foreign...', 1903. This collection of copies was exhibited in 1908 at Dickenson’s Gallery, London, which was owned by J.J.Foster. It was accompanied by a booklet 'Exhibition Illustrating the Art of Miniature Painting’, 1908. Both publications are available in the National Art Library, V&A.
In the exhibition booklet this object is listed on page 12 as No. 1 in Case Q, and identified as 'Mrs. Fitzherbert. After R. Cosway.'
Owner of the original miniature is cited in the booklet as 'Henry Drake, Esq.'
N.B. This image is of a child. The description in the catalogue as 'Mrs Fitzherbert After R Cosway' is probably a typo. It is worth noting that No.10 in case Q is correctly identified as 'Mrs Fitzherbert After R Cosway'. This miniature was no.1 in the original frame, but had dropped to the bottom of the frame. In hand-written notes taken before it was accessioned by the V&A and the objects were sealed into Frame Q, it was described as no.10 in the frame, rather than no.1.
