Object history | In the accompanying exhibition booklet, J.J. Foster has referred to the object as being titled as "The Sisters" after P.A. Hall, and the original owner cited as the Wallace Collection. Currently, the Wallace Collection has titled the object as 'Two Unknown Women', and it is artist Jean Urbain Guerin. In the annotated copy that was given to the V&A alongside the facsimiles, the Courtauld Institute of Art Curator has writen beside this entry that this copy is potentially portraying Duchess de Polignac and Comtesse de Polastron. I believe that this assesment is not accurate but rather the description found in the Wallace Collections' website is, and this facsimile is depicting Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and Lady Foster instead. |
