Physical description
With forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. [10], 192 pages, 1 unnumbered leaf of plates : illustrations. Colophon: t.p. verso and p. 192. Printer's device on t.p. verso. Binder's ticket on lower pastedown reads: "Bound by Burn 37 & 38 Kirby St." Case binding of red cloth. Both covers panel stamped with gold borders. Upper cover has vignette of Alice holding pig; lower cover has vignette of Cheshire Cat. Title and publisher in gilt on spine. Gilt edges. Black endpapers. Half-title. Publisher's monogram on verso. Signed and gathered in fours. Wood-engraved frontispiece and wood-engraved text illustrations by the Dalziel Brothers after Tenniel.

In chapter two, Alice stretches ‘like a telescope’ after eating a cake. This illustration shows her in the process of growing as her head and neck lengthen away from her feet. In the book, the image is positioned in close relation to the text, allowing both to be read at the same time. At the bottom of the page are the words, ‘Oh, my poor little feet’.
