Gallery label
In 1867 Carroll wrote to his publisher: ‘I am strongly advised to try a translation of Alice into French, on the grounds that French children are not nearly so well off for well-illustrated books as English or German.’ Many later editions, like this Swahili translation, included new illustrations of Alice and the animals. They reflect how the universal nature of the story means it can be adapted to different languages, cultures or countries. [Group label for Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser](2019)
