Gallery label
Carroll looked to nursery rhymes for the story of Through the Looking-Glass. We know that his family owned a copy of Aliquis’ Pictorial Humpty Dumpty, and this was probably his source for this character. In Looking-Glass, Humpty Dumpty is a rude and self-important character, who shows Alice that a word doesn’t always mean what it means, but ‘just what I choose it to mean’.
