Brief description | Costume in four parts, consisting of jacket, pelerine, skirt and petticoat, created for a ‘Spanish Dance,’ mid to late 20th century. |
Physical description | S.632:1-2019: Jacket Brown silk Zouave style jacket with embroidered decoration. The jacket has a high round neckline and no collar. The sleeves are long and flare out into bell shaped cuffs trimmed with lengths of hanging fringe. The front panels, cuffs and upper centre back of the jacket are embellished with an embroidered design formed from interlinked flowers and leaves in tones of red, blue, green, yellow, cream and purple. The jacket is stiffened with four short channels of boning. It fastens with a vertical row of seven buttons and pairs of metal hooks. It is lined throughout with cream polyester [?]. S.632:2-2019: Pelerine Triangular brown silk pelerine style collar, embroidered with a floral design in tones of red, blue, pink, yellow and green. The edge of the upper side of the collar is also bordered with a band of cream embroidery, formed into a pattern which resembles shells. The underside of the pelerine is faced with cream polyester[?] and the collar is secured with lengths of black silk ribbon, which is tied in a bow at the centre front. There is a large metal press stud at the centre back underside (either to secure the collar to another garment, or to add weight and control the hang). S.632:3-2019: Skirt Brown silk skirt in two layers, with a very full underskirt and a curved, ‘apron style’ upper skirt at the centre front. Two long shoulder straps run from the front to the rear of the skirt waistband. The front skirt and underskirt are both decorated with large floral motifs in tones of cream, red, blue, green, yellow and purple. The hems of both are bordered with an embroidered pattern in cream thread (the motifs resemble sea shells) and edged with a dark brown hanging silk tassled fringe (the underskirt only has this fringe detail at the rear). The skirt is not lined. It fastens at the centre back with a vertical zip and a pair of metal hooks and eyes. S.632:4-2019: Petticoat Cream petticoat with wide lightweight cream wool[?] waistband above a full, layered, machine net skirt. The machine net lower skirt has been constructed in two layers: an inner skirt formed from a plain machine net, with a cream cotton crotched hem and an upper skirt, formed from machine net which has been woven with a stylised floral pattern and has a wide scalloped hem. The petticoat fastens at the proper left hand side with a row of three metal hooks and matching thread loops. It is not lined. |
