Soon after founding his pottery, John Dwight experimented with the manufacture of ambitious busts and figures. Unlike most ceramic sculptures, these were modelled
by hand, rather than made in moulds, and would have been costly one-off productions.
The figure of Neptune has been deliberately fired dark brown in imitation of bronze.
