Cortège Hongroise, with costumes designed by RoubenTer-Arutunian, was choreographed by George Balanchine as a retirement present for ballerina Melissa Hayden who created the ballerina role with Jacques d’Amboise as her partner.
Performed to extracts of Alexander Glazunov’s Raymonda (1898), a ballet Balanchine had mined in half-recalled productions on a number of occasions, Cortège Hongroise was first performed by New York City Ballet at a gala benefit on 16 May 1973 and officially premiered on 17 May 1973. While the classical sections were led by Melissa Hayden and Jacques D’Amboise, the character sections were led by Karin von Aroldingen and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux.
