Object history | Part of the' Ragga 1994' ensemble in the V&A's 1994/95 Street Style exhibition. The catalogue for this exhibition describes the Ragga subculture as 'the prefix of the word 'Ragamuffin', which was originally a deropgatory term for delinquent Jamaican youths. Ragga began in the mid 1980s in Jamaican dancehalls and has since spread worldwide. The lyrics of the music associated with Ragga, performed by musicians such as Shabba Ranks, are aspirational, as is the dress and ostentatious fabrics with elaborate detailing. A note in the daybook suggests this could have been purchased from Dalston Market. Worn by Oz. |
