'Alhambra' vase

Vase
1883-5
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This vase is an impressive and striking piece made by Zsolnay, one of the most important 19th-century ceramics manufacturers. The vase was made during the period of production led by Vilmos Zsolnay (son of the founder Miklos Zsolnay) at their factory in Pecs, Hungary. Zsolnay is best known for its production of art pottery with mottled lustre glazes from 1900 onwards, after Vilmos’ death, however this vase is a strong example of the factory's earlier output, in a historicist style with colourful majolica glazes. The vase joins a number of so-called 'Alhambra' vases produced during the 19th century, which reflected the renewed interest and fascination for the Alhambra Palace in Spain.
