Penguin Books' success in the immediate pre-war years was largely due to the Penguin Specials, a series especially commisioned to address the political and social crisis. Britain by Mass Observation was an example of 'anthropology at home'. It was run by the left-wing poet Charles Madge, anthropologist Tom Harrisson and documentary film-maker Humphrey Jennings.
