Re:Imagining Musicals, 15 October 2022 - 4 February 2024 First World War The title, design and music of Oh What a Lovely War were intended to be provocative and undercut sentimentality. Contrasting the references to violence with patriotic lyrics, the show’s numbers, ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack up Your Troubles’ and ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, were sung against a screen showing statistics of fatalities from different First World War battles. The ‘end of the pier’ faux joviality was a ground-breaking format for communicating a strong political message.
